Lucy, a 17-year-old collie, wandered into a garden in Haddington, East Lothian, on Saturday morning. And thanks to a microchip under her fur, staff at Edinburgh Cat and Dog Home discovered she had come from Cornwall.

They were able to arrange a reunion for Lucy and her owners Sonya and Billy McKerran, who made a 20-hour round trip to collect her. Hospital care assistant Sonya, 43, said: “We thought it was a prank call, because we were convinced she was dead. We have absolutely no idea how she got to Scotland. ”

Billy, a singer who celebrated his 59th birthday yesterday, said: “This is the most terrific birthday present I’ve ever had.

“It proves that micro-chipping the dogs is a marvellous idea and well worth the money.”
