Microchipping Your Pet

Information Provided by Dog Basics

Hundreds of pets go missing every day. Some run off, escape from gardens or run off after prey when you are out on a walk, but an alarming number of pets are also stolen. You greatly increase the chance of getting your pet back, if he is microchipped.

Why Microchip?

Every day unidentified pets are humanely destroyed in animal homes throughout the country. Many could have been reunited with their worried owners if identification had been possible. Collars break and identification tags fall off and get lost. For a one-off payment a pet can be microchipped and owners details logged into a central database for life.

If your pet is lost, stolen or has run away, with a microchip fitted, you will be contacted as soon as your pet is found. There are over 3,000 scanners in use all over the country, at rescue centres, vets, dog wardens and police, which can read the unique code stored in the microchip. It is then a simple process of looking up the owner details stored on the PetLog database. PetLog is the national central database run by the Kennel Club. PetLog will confirm your contact details and you will be reunited with your pet. Microchipping is a harmless and permanent way to identify your pet.

About the Microchipping Procedure

Your pet can be microchipped at a very reasonable cost without the stress for your pet to be in a vets practice with all other animals and hospital smells. A certified implanter of pet-detect!® microchips can make homevisits if required.

The microchipping process if very short. It takes only a couple of seconds to do the microchipping and the rest of the time spent is filling out the paperwork, which should take but 10 minutes.

By the end of the day your pet will be registered onto the PetLog system.

The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice.

Once inserted, the microchip cannot move about or be seen, but can be read by a scanner through the skin. It is injected with a scalpel sharp, sterile needle under the skin of the neck, between the sholder blades, in a simple and quick procedure, just like an ordinary injection.

During the procedure the owner will keep the pet calm and focused on some nice treats.

Can my Pet be Microchipped?

It is possible for almost any type of animal to be implanted with a microchip. Dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and rabbits can all be microchipped in a matter of minutes. No anaesthetic is required. For pets such as birds and reptiles the procedure is a little different and may require sedation, so we recommend you turn to your local vet for them.

Is It Painful for my Pet to be Microchipped?

It is not painful for the animal to be microchipped or to have the microchip in place. The injection of the microchip can be compared to us getting a paper cut, due to the sharpness of the needle.
